Position Description for ABA Board of Governors
The American Board of Audiology® (ABA) seeks Board members who internalize the core value of integrity embraced by the ABA certification programs and who have sincere interest in advancing the mission and purpose of the ABA. Board candidates must be results oriented, committed to service excellence and lifelong learning as demonstrated by the active pursuit of rigorous continuing education, and possess strong strategic and problem solving capabilities. Key attributes of a Board candidate include being a team player, proactive, visionary, open-minded, and creative, as well as having the time and resources to devote to ABA leadership functions. The ABA seeks Board members from a variety of backgrounds and practice settings. Previous Board experience is desirable.
The Board of Governors is the governing body of the ABA, establishes policies governing the ABA and maintains a fiduciary responsibility to the certification body and its constituents.
Position Description
In order to provide leadership, and to clarify and sustain the mission of the ABA, a member of the ABA Board of Governors should be prepared to:
- Become knowledgeable about and comply with the Board of Governors' Bylaws and Policies & Procedures;
- Abide by the Conflict of Interest Statements and Security Policy in the ABA Policies & Procedures;
- Actively serve on at least one operating committee (Nominations; Marketing; University/Student Liaison; Eligibility, Recertification and Reinstatement; Continuing Education; Ethics; and Website) and as requested by the Board Chair;
- Participate in teleconference Board meetings (approximately every six weeks), attend two annual face-to-face Board meetings, one held in the Fall, and the other the annual AudiologyNOW! convention. Participation in meetings and on committees includes reading relevant materials before meetings, and contributing to discussion of issues during Board and committee deliberations;
- Serve as an effective spokesperson and fundraiser for initiatives promulgated by the ABA;
- Represent and promote the ABA to the profession by promoting the ABA's certification programs at conferences, in professional publications, and in interactions with Audiology colleagues. These efforts should purposefully include students in training who may look to the ABA for professional certification;
- Approve and support the financial and program goals of the annual budget to assure the ABA's financial stability;
- Play a vital role in establishing strategic plans and act as a spokesperson to support and disseminate the plan's goals and objectives to ABA certificants and others;
- Express opinions during discussion and debates, speaking with one voice regarding the final decisions of the Board;
- Maintain confidentiality of Board discussions and personal information regarding certificants and applicants for certificants;
- Actively recruit candidates for the Board who have demonstrated leadership skills and a commitment to the ABA, as well as recruit non-Board ABA members who have a special interest that could assist the Board in its work.
- The ABA strongly encourages all Board Members to make an annual fund gift to the American Academy of Audiology Foundation, who fund many worthwhile programs in research, education and public awareness, as well as ABA projects.

Note: Members of the ABA Board will be reimbursed for reasonable travel, lodging and meal expenses for the annual face-to-face meeting. The ABA does not reimburse expenses for attending the meeting held in conjunction with AudiologyNOW!
